Wildlife at Paradise Lodge Costa Rica

Stay in the Heart of One of Costa Rica’s Most Biodiverse Regions

Leaf Leaf

One of the greatest experiences at Paradise Lodge Costa Rica begins the moment you step outside your room.

Nestled on a 9-hectare (22-acre) private rainforest property at approximately 440 meters (1,445 feet) above sea level, Paradise Lodge enjoys a unique microclimate where refreshing mountain air meets lush tropical rainforest. The comfortable temperatures, spectacular scenery, and incredible biodiversity make this one of the most rewarding places to experience nature in Southern Costa Rica.

But what truly makes our location exceptional is something even more remarkable.

Part of an Important Biological Corridor

Paradise Lodge is situated within a biological corridor connecting the legendary Corcovado National Park with the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve in the Talamanca Mountains.

This natural corridor allows wildlife to move between the lowland rainforests and the higher mountain forests, creating one of the richest ecosystems in Costa Rica. Many animals travel through these forests in search of food, territory, and mates, making our property an active part of this living network.

For nature lovers and photographers, this means that every day brings the possibility of an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

More Than 2.5 Kilometers of Private Rainforest Trails

Our guests can explore over 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of private hiking trails that wind through secondary rainforest, streams, gardens, and forest edges.

To better understand the wildlife around us, we have installed camera traps at various locations throughout the property. Over the years, these cameras have documented an astonishing diversity of mammals, birds, and other rainforest inhabitants.

Even today, new observations continue to surprise us.

A Paradise for Birdwatchers

Costa Rica is famous for its birdlife, and Paradise Lodge is no exception.

More than 100 bird species have been recorded on and around our property, making it a wonderful destination for both experienced birders and casual nature enthusiasts.

Among the many species regularly observed are:

  • Two species of toucans
  • Colorful hummingbirds
  • Owls
  • Hawks
  • Vultures
  • Oropendolas
  • Tanagers
  • Flycatchers
  • Trogons
  • Parrots

Early mornings are especially magical, as the rainforest awakens with an orchestra of calls, songs, and vibrant colors.

Whether you are enjoying breakfast on your terrace or walking one of our trails, birdwatching is part of everyday life at Paradise Lodge.

The Rainforest Comes Alive at Night

As the sun sets, an entirely different world begins to emerge.

Night walks often reveal fascinating creatures that remain hidden during the day, including:

  • Poison dart frogs
  • Tree frogs
  • Fer-de-lance pit vipers
  • Praying mantises
  • Tarantulas
  • Countless insects and other nocturnal rainforest species

The sounds of the jungle transform into a natural symphony, creating an unforgettable experience for anyone interested in tropical ecosystems.

Meet the Famous Blue Morpho Butterfly

One of the most beautiful and photographed inhabitants of Paradise Lodge is the spectacular Blue Morpho butterfly.

Its brilliant metallic-blue wings shimmer through the forest as it glides between trees and gardens. Yet when it lands and closes its wings, it almost disappears, revealing a perfectly camouflaged brown underside.

For many guests, seeing a Blue Morpho floating through the rainforest feels almost magical.

Always Keep Your Camera Ready

There is one piece of advice we give every guest:

Always keep your camera close.

A troop of monkeys may suddenly cross the trail. A toucan could land in a nearby tree. A sloth might be quietly resting overhead, while colorful butterflies dance through the gardens.

Even some of Costa Rica’s most elusive wild cats—including ocelots, margays, and pumas—have been documented on our property through our wildlife cameras.

Every walk offers the possibility of discovering something extraordinary.

Experience the Wild Side of Costa Rica

Paradise Lodge Costa Rica is more than a place to stay—it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.

Thanks to its location at approximately 440 meters above sea level, its 9-hectare private rainforest, and its position within a biological corridor linking Corcovado National Park and the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, guests can experience an astonishing variety of wildlife without ever leaving the property.

Whether you are a wildlife photographer, birdwatcher, hiker, or simply someone who loves nature, Paradise Lodge offers authentic rainforest experiences that few places in Costa Rica can match.

Bring your hiking shoes. Bring your binoculars. And above all, keep your camera ready—you never know what incredible wildlife is waiting around the next corner.
